THE PHILOSOPHY OF ART.
THE CRAFT OF WRITING.
'Cromarty Firth’
Artist, writer and researcher exploring light, atmosphere, and perception through landscape.
Working at the intersection of environmental observation, dark sky advocacy, and contemporary painting.
I am a Scottish artist based in the Highlands, working with painting, observation, and environmental study to explore how light shapes our experience of landscape.
My work grows out of time spent watching atmosphere and weather shift across land and sea. I am interested in thresholds of visibility, moments when colour dissolves into tone, when forms appear or recede, and when perception becomes heightened. These conditions often occur at dusk, in storms, or under low light, when the familiar becomes uncertain and attention sharpens.
I have been painting for over thirty years. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, affiliations that reflect the connection in my work between visual practice, observation, and environmental awareness.
You can explore current work, writing, and projects through the sections below.
My work operates as a small, boutique organisation, which allows me to work closely, thoughtfully, and at an appropriate pace. Alongside my studio work, I meet with artists, astronomers, and local communities to celebrate and protect the region’s remarkable night skies, and run workshops on creativity and art techniques.
I have kept a studio and office at Wasps Inverness Creative Academy since it opened in 2019, and am a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Preferred Artist of the Visual Arts Association.
